For a day in Mont-Dore, take the time to discover a different side of Prony. After a stroll through the village, continue towards the thermal springs at Baie des Kaoris. Peaceful and slightly hidden away, this secluded spot feels wonderfully remote. It is the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the natural surroundings and end the day gently, between forest, bay and warm waters.

One final tip: wear shoes you do not mind getting covered in red soil. Around here, they may well take home a little souvenir from the Great South.

Your Stay Step by step

Day 1 Conquer the summit

Begin your weekend with a visit to Boulari Market, open from Friday to Sunday morning. Soak up the local atmosphere and pick up everything you need for a tasty picnic before heading to the starting point of the Mont-Dore hike.

Lace up your best walking shoes and begin the climb. The trail is demanding, with a steady ascent, but the effort is more than rewarded at the summit. From the top, spectacular 360-degree views stretch across the southern lagoon, its islets and Nouméa in the distance.

Enjoy your picnic lunch with this breathtaking panorama before beginning the descent.

A few tips :

Set off early to hike Mont-Dore and avoid the hottest part of the day. Wear a cap, as there is very little shade along the trail, and do not forget your walking shoes — preferably not white, unless you would like them dyed orange by the red soil!

In the afternoon, give your legs a well-earned rest and take a scenic drive along the Route de la Corniche. Stop at the famous Plum Spring to cool off and refill your water bottles with exceptionally pure natural mineral water straight from the fountain.

End this active first day by watching the sunset cast golden light across Plum Beach. In the evening, settle in for dinner at Restaurant Bienvenue, a much-loved local institution known for its generous, authentic cuisine.

Day 2 Meeting the people of Ouen Island and stopping at Casy Islet

For your second day, set sail for the Great South and its marine treasures. Join an unforgettable small-group excursion to Ouen Island, with no more than six passengers on board for a relaxed and personal experience. Spend the day meeting local residents and discovering their customs and way of life.

Located within New Caledonia’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed lagoon, the island is home to pristine wilderness, scenic walking trails and inviting places to swim.

At lunchtime, enjoy a warm and convivial home-cooked meal with local hosts at Chez Titine.

On the return journey, stop at Casy Island, a small natural gem set in the waters of Prony Bay. It is the perfect final escape into the wild before heading back to the mainland.

Tip :

Make the most of your stop at Casy Island by exploring its walking trail. Passing former penal colony remains, araucaria and cycad forests, and small shaded coves, the walk offers a fascinating blend of nature and history.
