Your stay Step by step

Start your day early with a visit to Waho tribal village, the beating heart of Yaté. Wander between the stalls at the small local market, where you may find freshly caught seafood, root vegetables such as yams and taro, tropical fruit, and beautiful handicrafts made by the women of the village, including woven and carved pieces. It is the perfect opportunity to chat with local residents and experience Kanak culture first-hand.

Tip: Check the market’s opening days in advance, as it is generally held at weekends.

Then make your way to Blue River Provincial Park. Leave your car at the entrance or hire a mountain bike on site and venture into this vast natural sanctuary of red earth and lush green forest. Be sure to stop at Pérignon Bridge to take in this truly unique landscape. Keep your eyes open and move quietly: you may be lucky enough to spot a kagu, New Caledonia’s endemic bird, which is often seen in this area.

Events in the Great South

An afternoon before the concrete giant

Leave the park and drive towards the impressive Yaté Dam. The approach is an experience in itself, revealing Yaté lake, the largest freshwater lake in New Caledonia.

The viewpoint: Once you reach the dam, head to the designated lookout. From here, you will face a monumental concrete wall rising 60 metres high. This is one of New Caledonia’s key sources of hydroelectric power. Take in the dramatic view over the Yaté River below as it resumes its natural course, winding through the surrounding vegetation.

Before heading back, spend the late afternoon beside the lake. As the light begins to fade, it brings out the warm tones of the red laterite soil, creating one final unforgettable view to end the day.
