This trail will please all the lovers of palm groves... the reason? The trail is lined from end to end, by many species of palm trees, of different shapes and colors ... including the rarest and most endangered palm tree in the world! Only that...
Path inaccessible: the Blue River Provincial Park is temporarily closed.
A veritable "botanical Noah's ark" of palms, the path is dotted from right to left and from top to bottom with a multitude of species of palm trees... Created on a former mining site, the trail allows you to discover both the beauty of the mining bush, so rich in biodiversity, as well as the dense humid forest, through its palm trees, all endemic to the Great South of New Caledonia. Any budding gardener or connoisseur will recognise the Clinosperma bracteale, the Basselinia deplanchei or the Pritchardiopsis jeanneneyi...
♦ Did you know?
Pritchardiopsis jeanneneyi is the rarest and most endangered palm in the world!! There is only one adult, fruiting individual in the world: the one inside the small forest where this path is located. A few juvenile plants are also present in this forest or held by individuals and collectors. And get this: the two-year-old seedlings have only 4 to 5 leaves: it takes more than 15 years for the trunk to form and between 20 and 25 years for the first blooms to appear.
Oh yes! The Great South region is rich in great endemic biodiversity, unique in the world, in addition to the impressive level of endemism already present in New Caledonia.
